VIRA Race Results – 2005

Sunday 24 July 2005 – Oakleigh

A different format of racing tonight with “pursuit” style 500m racing with very close results, and first place decided by just one hundredth of a second!!(The average of two recorded times was taken.) Ice conditions were the best we’ve seen for ages with no hockey played all weekend. Even the two figure skaters had a try out at racing, and found out that 5 laps can be a long way! Thanks again to timekeepers and lap scorers.

The second race night for the season saw Jason and Isabella get personal best times. Many thanks to the timekeepers Adam, Anne, Sarah and Gordon, and Steve Morunga for refereeing.

‘A’ 1000m

Danny lead off the start for a couple of quick laps to wake everyone up, then some slow laps unfolded with everyone watching for a break. 3 laps to go and the dash for the line was on. Corey and Toby crossed the line in a very close finish, with Rusty trying to get used to his old boots, and looking a bit tired after the honeymoon….....

1. Danny Kah 1:55.66     2. Corey Williams 1:56.41     3. Toby Dite 1:56.44     4. Russell Collins 2:00.96

‘B’ 1000m

Daniel jumped away to start the dash home from a long way with 8 laps to go, with Will and the others content to chase him down. Will led the chase, with Jason and Ken in tow. Jason took over with the gap closing at 5 to go and then Will passed to second again but almost had a close encounter with a mat coming out of the corner, allowing Jason to slip through again, but Daniel hung on well to win.

1. Daniel Ralph 2:05.57     2. Jason Rushen 2:06.95     3. Will Shackleton 2:07.39    4. Ken Stewart 2:08.79     5. Wayne Dite 2:17.85

‘C’ 500m

Mariah got off to a flying start for the first lap, but once John got up to speed he timed his pass well to hit the front. Kathleen chased well to finish right behind Mariah, with Karen finishing well in fourth.

1. John Mackay 1:08.22     2. Mariah Williams 1:10.50     3. Kathleen Bennett 1:10.63     4. Karen Merwart 1:14.65

‘Joeys’ 2 Laps

Isabella started her first race tonight to the cheering of all the other skaters, skating her best time and almost breaking the one minute mark !

1. Isabella Seddon 1:01.42

Sunday 22 May 2005, Oakleigh

First race for the season, with some pretty average ice conditions after 6 games of hockey during the day, but all races closely contested. Skater’s best times in Victoria are shown in Bold.

‘B’ 1500m
Wayne decided to get the pace cracking from the start, leading the first half of the race in an attempt to wear out the young ‘uns, until Daniel decided to get out in front and jumped away with about 8 laps to go. Melissa led the chase to reel Daniel back in and slowly inched closer lap by lap, but couldn’t quite get there. Jason made a late run from the back, and succeeded in crossing the line in second, half a skate behind a well deserved win for Daniel.
1. Daniel Ralph 3:06.84 2. Jason Rushen 3:06.98 3. Melissa Kah 3:07.60 4. Wayne Dite 3:07.87

‘A’ 1500m
After a slowish start for a couple of laps, Ken decided to get in front and up the pace, then Russell took over the lead with 10laps to go, increasing speed again. With 4 to go Corey made his move to the front for the run home, and 2 to go Danny hit the lead, with Ken almost beating a stationary Russell over the line!
1. Danny Kah 2:52.79 2. Corey Williams 2:53.88 3. Russell Collins 3:05.90 4. Ken Stewart 3:05.93

‘C’ 1000m
Some very close passing in the initial laps had the judges taking a close look, but despite multiple passes occurring in two corners, the C’s group showed textbook passing with no contact with each other on the tight track. Julie got a good lead with 8 laps to go and skated for home. Mariah came in second with Karen chasing hard to knock 18 seconds off her best time, and Josh discovered how far a 1000m feels, finishing well even on shaky legs in his first ever race!
1. Julie Courtier 2:12.08 2. Mariah Williams 2:20.20 3. Karen Merwart 2:21.32 4. Josh 2:30.95

‘Joey’ 2 lap handicap
A reluctant Isabelle made it to the start line against the two Kah boys, Joshua with a half lap head start, and Isabella almost a lap head start. Skyler passed Joshua with half a lap to go, and all three enjoyed a freddo frog after their skate.

Thursday 7 April 2005, Bayswater

Unfortunately the first Club Racing for the year had to be postponed.  The only other option really was to take our swimming costumes down to the rink and have freestyle races.  There was some problem with the electrics at the Bayswater rink and the ice had melted on the Wednesday night.  Hopefully we have a bit more luck next time.
