7 Lap Fly

The individual time trial was put on primarily for those wishing to get experience in individual time trials, as required to qualify for the Olympic Winter Institute (OWI) squad. (And for those who like to suffer) Toby volunteered first , and paid for a very fast start – starting faster than his flying one lap times – with a not so fast finish. But that’s how you learn to time trial J. Similary Corey also opened up hard, with Russell in freight train mode with consistent laps paying off.

1. Toby Dite 1:14.64 (10.07/10.06/10.15/10.58/10.78/11.55/11.45)     2. Danny Kah1:14.99     3. Russell Collins 1:18.76     4. Corey Williams 1:18.99 (10.48/10.66/11.07/11.30/11.33/11.87/12.28)     5. Melissa Kah 1:26.10     6. Daniel Ralph 1:32.89

Thursday 22 July ’04 Bayswater

Racing suited for the sprinters tonight with times taken for one lap flying start and one lap standing start. Corey came in fastest on both, with Ping proving that noise does work with a 3rd in standing start. Also first race ever for the littlies – Skyler / Joshua / Stephanie which brought the loudest cheer. Thanks again to the timekeepers. (Personal best times in bold, see also  Best Times)

Sunday 4 July ’04 Oakleigh

First race for the season at Oakleigh had everyone keen to blast around the 100m track. Some excellent times skated with best times in Victoria in bold below, Toby moved up to 2nd place overall, in front of Lachlan Hay in best 1500m time, (See Best Times)

‘A’ 1500m

Corey again poured on the pace from the start, with everyone content to sit on for the free ride, with the fast pace stringing out those on the back. Mike Attwood was ideally positioned in second place, then at 6 laps to go Toby moved up to take the lead, with Danny hitting the front with a lap and a half to go and Toby in hot pursuit for a close finish. Ping almost got to Corey in the last lap, and Ken skated mostly his own race, grumbling about the fast start!

1. Danny Kah 2:37.89     2. Toby Dite 2:38.01     3. Mike Attwood 2:40.62     4. Corey Williams 2:48.41     5. Ping D’Souza 2:49.02      6. Ken Stewart 3:04.90

‘B’ 1000m

Another close race, Wayne decided to get going early, after a fit looking George lined up on the start. Mike Seddon slotted in to second and George did a close pass to get into third. Four laps to go and Mike Seddon decided to get out of any trouble and went to the front for the run home. John Mackay made up heaps of ground to close in on the two leaders, but couldn’t find a way past on the tight track. Julie finished just in front of a now not so fit looking George. J

1. Mike Seddon 2:00.84     2. Wayne Dite 2:01.92     3. John Mackay 2:03.91     4. Julie Courtier 2:05.75     5. George Fabian 2:05.93

‘C’ 1000m

First training session for ages and first race for the season for Catherine, who cruised around for the win. The real battle was for second with Kathleen trying a pass in which Mariah accelerated to stay in front, then another go saw Kathleen finally get past, with Karen skating her own race not far behind in fourth.

1. Catherine King 2:18.99     2. Kathleen Bennett 2:29.14     3. Mariah Williams 2:31.28      4. Karen Merwart 2:39.30

Thursday 24 June’04 Bayswater

Despite very soft ice conditions due to the plant being turned off, some skaters were still willing to race hard, particularly in the D/E races, and Corey in the ‘A’s which provided some close racing .

‘A’ 500m

Lachlan strung them out from the start with Russell passing Melissa half way through.

1. Lachlan Hay 51.24     2. Corey Williams 52.52     3. Russell Collins 54.45     4. Melissa Kah 54.90

‘C’ 500m

Wayne scored a perfect 10 for his crash into the mats, then looked around to accuse the invisible man that caused it.

1. Mariah Williams 1:15.27     2. Kathleen Bennett 1:15.50     3. Karen Merwart 1:15.64     4. Sarah Barr 1:25.38

Skaters were re-ranked based on the first race’s times for the second 500m:

‘A’ 500m

Corey led from the start with Toby concentrating more on what was going on behind than what was going on in front of him, Corey hanging on to take the win.

Thursday 10 June ’04 Bayswater

Another good night of close racing in the longer distances. Again most of the times were “best times skated in Victoria” – that’s the bold times below. (See Best Times)

‘A’ 3000m

This time Corey poured on the pace from the start, getting almost half a lap lead. Russell had a go at bridging to Corey for a while but then waited for the freight train which was coming through. It all came together with 15 laps to go but the pace just got faster with no-one wanting to be too far down the back, except Melissa who skated her own pace and picked off any stragglers. With about 5 to go Danny went for it with Lachlan in pursuit, Lachlan passing with a lap to go, and Toby passing Sashen also with one lap to go to take third.

1. Lachlan Hay 5:28.85 (Track Record)      2. Danny Kah 5:29.08     3. Toby Dite 5:37.33     4. Sashen Chetty 5:39.73     5. Mike Attwood 5:44.12     6. Melissa Kah 5:50.47     7. Russell Collins 6:04.34     Corey Williams DNF

‘B’ 1500m

Ping was determined not to go flat out from the gun as usual after some threats from the older skaters but still led out at a brisk pace. Will was going well until succumbing to “neckguardiustootightius” about half way through when Wayne hit the front for the long drag home. To Wayne’s surprise Ken’s secret training must be paying off, as Ken breezed to the front with about 4 to go and put the hammer down. Daniel was looking for a way to get past Ping for a while but Ping held on for 3rd, and Jason making a late charge to finish right behind Julie.

1. Ken Stewart 2:53.86     2. Wayne Dite 2:55.66     3. Ping D’Souza 2:56.20     4. Daniel Ralph 2:57.00     5. Will Shackleton 3:02.96     6. Julie Courtier 3:08.76     7. Jason Rushen 3:08.90

‘C’ 500m

With Mariah getting a great start off the line and Hamish right behind, everyone in the C race were going for it. Sarah moved up to pass Karen, but in the confusion Kathleen took the inside line and ended up passing both Karen and Sarah. Hamish got past Mariah and went flat out to finish 1st, Karen skated some 30 seconds faster than her best 500m time and Zoe cruised around to finish well.

1. Hamish Robertson 1:08.36     2. Mariah Williams 1:09.98     3. Kathleen Bennett 1:12.48     4. Karen Merwart 1:14.36    5. Sarah Barr 1:16.57     6. Zoe Glennister 1:33.98

Thursday 27 May ’04 Bayswater

First races for the season brought out a good competitive field with some exciting racing. A lot of times were “best times skated in Victoria” – that’s the bold times below. (See Best Times) Congratulations to the best improvers – Kathleen knocked 20 seconds off her 500m time, and Hamish skated 10 seconds faster !!

‘A’ 1000m

Danny bolted from the gun, with Ping skating flat out in second and taking up all the track for as long as possible. As the pack started getting tired, Lachlan decided to up the pace and in the matter of two laps caught and passed Danny with one and a half laps to go. The fight for third was where the action was, with a very close finish from 3rd to 6th.

1. Lachlan Hay 1:38.35 (Track Record !!)     2. Danny Kah 1:40.00     3. Corey Williams 1:44.35     4. Mike Attwood 1:44.51     5. Toby Dite 1:44.82     6. Ping D’Souza 1:45.49

‘B’ 1000m

Daniel was not hanging around with all the “oldies” at the start and the pace was on straight away. But the crafty veterans kept Daniel within reach, and with 5 to go Melissa hit the front, Wayne looked comfortable, and Daniel tagged on for the ride. In Mike Seddon’s first race for maybe a decade or two?? he positioned himself well with his main competition right behind him !! Melissa kept grinding out the laps, just able to accelerate enough out of the corners to keep Wayne in second and they crossed the line with a skate blade between them. Daniel finished well in 3rd with John Mackay having his trademark intimate encounter with a mat. J

1. Melissa Kah 1:52.60     2. Wayne Dite 1:52.65     3. Daniel Ralph 1:56. 10     4. Mike Seddon 1:57.60     5. Will Shackleton 1:58.67     6 Julie Courtier 2:05.68     John Mackay 2:13.19(F)

‘C’ 1000m

First ever race for Jason and a strung out field discovering just how far a 1000m can be, with some tired legs towards the end!

1. Jason Rushen 2:10.68     2. Lachlan Rhodes 2:15.44     3. Hamish Robertson 2:27.96     4. Kathleen Bennett 2:32.83     5. Mariah Williams 2:51.17

(500m start list ranked on times from the 1000m:)

‘A’ 500m

Lachlan led from the start with Corey skating well to go under 50seconds.

1. Lachlan Hay 47.41 (Track Record !)     2. Danny Kah 48.33     3. Corey Williams 49.25     4. Ping D’Souza 53.57

‘B’ 500m

Will led all the way, but the lactic acid in the legs meant he just started to lock up around the last corner, with Wayne all over the back of him looking for a place to pass. Will held on until about 5m to go when Wayne got around the outside to win by a skate length.

1. Wayne Dite 55.64     2. Will Shackleton 55.66     3. Melissa Kah 56.30     4. Daniel Ralph 57.36

‘C’ 500m

No intimate encounters with mats this time for John, breaking the 1min mark in a good race.

1. John Mackay 59.70     2. Julie Courtier 1:01.89     3. Jason Rushen 1:02.97

‘D’ 500m

Close racing again with Lachlan Rhodes in front and all the others chasing hard!

1. Lachlan Rhodes 1:07.94     2. Hamish Robertson 1:08.93     3. Mariah Williams 1:11.85     4. Kathleen Bennett 1:14.27
