Sunday 22 June ’03, Oakleigh

‘A’ 1000m

Another fast one tonight as Sashen wasn’t waiting around for anyone else, and had the other skaters thinking it was a 500m race, with his speed off the line. He was followed by Mike, Toby and Lachlan at the rear. At 4 to go, Mike had a big slip coming out of the corner, with Lachlan seizing the opportunity to move up to second, and Toby looking for which way to go if Mike happened to fall. In the last two laps Lachlan hit the front, with Sashen hanging on to second with the others not far behind. Best times at Oakleigh for Sashen, Mike & Toby.

1. Lachlan Hay 1:44.97     2. Sashen Chetty 1:47.00     3. Mike Attwood 1:47.47     4. Toby Dite 1:49.95

‘B’ 1000m

A more leisurely gentleman’s start to this one, with Will in control on the front. With Ken content to sit behind, Will cranked up the pace just enough to discourage any passing. Johnny Mac has a rather loud crash at 6 to go but got up to finish. With 3 to go the race was on and the pack strung out. In the end Will had just enough on Ken to win comfortably and no protests against fit skaters by Steve Morunga were entertained.

1. Will Shackleton 2:01.71     Ken Stewart 2:02.46     3. Steve Morunga 2:07.90     4. Christian Carmichael 2:16.31     5. John MacKay 2:29.05 (F)

‘C’ 500m

Julie showed her recent improvement with a personal best in Victoria by 4 seconds, and both Jo and Mariah posting the fastest times they have done in ages.

1. Julie Courtier 1:01.83     Jo Withers 1:11.39    Mariah Williams 1:22.24

Friday 25th April 2003, Oakleigh

Another exiting set of races held on ANZAC day, our last Friday night for a while. In the ‘A’s 1000m, after the first half lap Toby decided that the leisurely start was not going to get him a very fast 500m split time, so off he went, getting about a quarter of a lap on the other slackos. Danny led the rest of the pack, not letting the young whippersnapper in front get too far. With 4 to go, the pack caught Toby, and by this time the pace was getting real fast. With Danny trying everything to stay in front of a charging Lachlan on the tight Oakleigh track, Lachlan passed at half a lap to go and finished strong to take a well deserved win. Sashen came third within sight of the leaders, with Toby hanging on not far behind.

1. Lachlan Hay 1:44.11     2. Danny Kah 1:44.49     3. Sashen Chetty 1:49.98      4. Toby Dite 1:51.26      5. Russell Collins 2:03.53

The ‘B’ 1000m saw a very close finish between Ken & Will, with Mike Attwood in front most of the way, and Wayne still nursing his collar bone. Quite a civilised race, there’s not too many races where the combined age total of the skaters is nearly 200 !! J

1. Mike Attwood 1:55.92     2. Will Shackleton 1:56.99     3. Ken Stewart 1:57.38     4. Wayne Dite 2:07.58

The ‘C’ 1000m saw another very close race between Julie & Cathryn, with Ping having another trademark intimate encounter with a mat at the Zamboni end, after bolting away from the others. Good to see Lachlan Rhodes back and holding off a gaining Ping at the end, with Jo just ahead.

1. Julie Courtier 2:05.32     2. Cathryn King 2:06.12     3. Jo Withers (NT)      4. Lachlan Rhodes 2:25.20     5. Ping 2:26.40

The usually chaotic ‘D’ 500m saw no falls from Bruce or Ping, Janine’s blades stayed on for the whole race, and James didn’t practice any hip checks !!

1. Ping 1:07.26     2. Bruce Rhodes 1:10.16     3. James 1:21.66     4. Janine 1:35.71

Sunday 6th April 2003, Oakleigh

The first race for the season saw everyone keen to get stuck into a 1500m race. The ‘A’ group looked a bit lost without Mike Attwood there to push the pace along for the first few laps, but Will Shacks took up the lead in his first race in years, then Russell hit the front. With the pack cruising along nicely, Danny moved up on the outside clipping a mat in the process, then Lachlan turned on the afterburners and it turned into an all out stampede after that. Toby and Corey did very well to hang on to the lead skaters for so long, with Toby’s time some 28 seconds better than his personal best time in Victoria!! As for Lachlan, according to my records I believe the time is a track record – way to go!!

1. Lachlan Hay 2:39.69     2. Danny Kah 2:40.47     3. Sachen Chetty 2:45.38     4 Toby Dite 2:47.17     5. Corey Williams 3:04.52     6. Russell Collins 3:06.38     7. Will Shackelton 3:06.69

The ‘B’ group also raced a very hard and fast race with an unfortunate fall for Christian early on putting him out of contention after mixing it with the leading 4 skaters. Daniel led the whole way, kicking on the last 3 laps to come home strongly. He also skated a time 24 seconds faster than his personal best in Victoria, and the time would have placed him 6th in the ‘A’ race – so watch out ‘A’s !! Julie and Catherine were content to let Daniel push the pace in front, with Julie just getting away from Katherine in the closing laps. Mariah skated her first long 1500m race, finishing well!

1. Daniel Ralph 3:06.09     2. Julie Courtier 3:07.55     3. Catherine King 3:08.40     4. Christian Carmichael 3:23.12     5. Jo Withers 3:39.20     6. Mariah Williams 4:13.88

The final race was a 3 lapper with 5 starters, Ping provided all the action with fast straights, but more than a touch of trouble getting around the corners! Ping retired early after taking out half the mats on one corner, providing some interesting avoidance tactics by the flying Toby/Corey/Daniel trio. Zoe cruised around with her usual smile on her face to finish well.

1. Corey Williams 35.28     2. Toby Dite 35.32     3. Daniel Ralph 41.97     4. Zoe Glenister 1:02.20     5. Hing DNF
