May 31 2002 Friday Demo Races, Ringwood 8:30pm.
WOW !!What a crowd we had to skate in front of !! Things looked a bit hectic when we turned up for the races during the Friday general session and saw the line-up of public waiting to get in. There were about 300 people on the ice, in fact the skate rental run out of skates. Then we got the news that there would be no ice resurface. But everyone was still keen and the races turned out fine anyway. No race times were taken due to the slow ice.
First up was the ‘A’ 500m. Steve Gray got off to a flying start with Sachen hot on his heels. Then with a heap of passes as the rough ice slowed people up, it all came down to the last corner, where Russell (who had been waiting for his chance) stormed through to take the win. Across the line were 1. Russell 2. Lachlan 3. Danny 4. Sachen 5. Steve.
Next was the ‘B’ 500m Ken took off with Darren in hot pursuit, then Cathryn with John right behind Jo. Things stayed pretty much the same until Darren crashed with a lap to go (for the crowd of course) Placings were 1. Ken 2. Darren (f) 3. Cathryn 4. Jo 5. John
The ‘C’ 500m had the crowd cheering with Corey bolting off the line and everyone trying to stay with him. Christian took a fall but got up to finish with the result being 1. Corey 2. Toby 3. Daniel 4. Christian (f).
The last race was a handicap race over 3 laps which all came together in the 2nd last and last corners with skaters passing inside, outside and anywhere there was a gap. Handicaps were worked out based on best 500m time in Victoria from last season. Steve started as scratchman, combining his starting technique with chatting up rink rats, with Ken on limit at 41m (last block out of the corner) Sachen had a great handicap due to improving this season over his best 500m from last year. Across the finish everyone was within a couple of metres with 1. Sachen (34m) 2. Russell (19m) 3. Lachlan (21m) 4. Ken (41m) 5. Danny (5m) 6. Steve (0m) 7. Darren (37m)
